Hazard Management

As a strong advocate for balanced investment across prevention and preparedness activities, rather than purely focussing on response, advancing sovereign capabilities that mitigate, eliminate, or protect against the risk of CBR hazards is a key focus.
HSSA’s growing Hazard Management Program is utilising Australian and international expertise to build and strengthen sovereign capabilities that prevent and protect against a range of CBR hazards. These capabilities will ensure Australian first responders are better prepared and supported in responding to and managing hazard incidents.
HSSA’s Collaborative Projects in Hazard Management include:
- Strengthening national preparedness
Supporting state and territory agencies to build the workforce skills, systems and technology needed for rapid and effective incident management. - Advancing access to hazard knowledge
Enhancing Australian access to leading software for accurate and up-to-date hazard information key to frontline decision support.
Why This Work Matters
Outcomes from this program will:
- protect military and first responder personnel with innovative equipment,
- support frontline decision making, and
- strengthen national resilience against threats.
Innovation in Action
One standout project has brought together RMIT University, DSTG, Bruck Textiles and CSIRO to develop a next-generation protective uniform. Using nanofibre technology, this lightweight fabric filters out harmful chemical and biological particles while remaining breathable and comfortable, even in extreme conditions. This breakthrough material will enhance protection of defence and first responder personnel from CBR threats. Click here to see the full article.
